Introduction to LAKOTA CULTURE 114

Creator has given us laws, values and principles to live by. When these are violated, our Sacred Hoop will become broken. Lakota Elder Larry Salway explains that Harmony, Balance, Beauty and Peace are replaced with feelings of inferiority and shame.

This video is part of our Mentor Training series, "Lakota Culture". We also have a series on Poverty.

Larry Salway grew up on the Rosebud Reservation in southwestern South Dakota. He rose out of the poverty of his childhood and became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and later, a professor at the Oglala Lakota College campuses in Kyle and Rapid City, SD. He served for five years as Tribal Judge in Pine Ridge, SD. Mr. Salway has also served as pastor of churches in Arizona and South Dakota. Larry is Co-President of Life Initiatives.

HOW OUR SACRED HOOP IS BROKEN

Outline of Lakota Culture 114

how our Sacred Hoop is Broken

Whenever we violate a law, principle of value of our culture, we weaken the Sacred Hoop. If we continue violating these things, our Hoop will eventually be broken

When our Hoop becomes broken, Harmony, Balance, Beauty, and Peace leave us.

These good things are replaced with feelings of inferiority and shame.

We then begin filling this void with things that harm us and our bodies.

We begin to isolate ourselves; we lose respect for ourselves and others.

We lose sight of the unseen, spiritual world.

We experience loss of relationships.
