Introduction to LAKOTA CULTURE 110
The Sacred Hoop (Medicine Wheel) symbolizes a life in balance. Lakota Elder Larry Salway explains that a life out of balance comes from a Sacred Hoop that has in some way been broken.
This video is part of our Mentor Training series, "Lakota Culture". We also have a series on Poverty.
Larry Salway grew up on the Rosebud Reservation in southwestern South Dakota. He rose out of the poverty of his childhood and became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and later, a professor at the Oglala Lakota College campuses in Kyle and Rapid City, SD. He served for five years as Tribal Judge in Pine Ridge, SD. Mr. Salway has also served as pastor of churches in Arizona and South Dakota. Larry is Co-President of Life Initiatives.

Outline of Lakota Culture 110
The Sacred Hoop - Sacredness of the Sacred Hoop
Laws and Principles of Behavior – Our choices and actions produce results (either good or bad); walking the Red Road (the Good Way ) produces good results.
Bad choices and behaviors “break” the Hoop and have negative spiritual, cognitive, emotional or physical consequences.
Wellness is restoring the broken hoop so we can walk in harmony, balance, beauty, and peace
Restoring the broken hoop requires healing in all parts of our lives: Spiritual, Cognitive, Emotional, and Physical
By keeping the Sacred Hoop whole, we walk in Wisdom (or peace), Beauty, Harmony, Balance, and Love.
