Outline of Lakota Culture 102
Native and Non-native cultures view the following things differently:
(1) AGE: Natives respect elderly; Non-Natives emphasize youth
(2) EXCELLENCE: Natives emphasize Group Accomplishment; Non-Natives emphasize the Status from Winning
(3) CHILDREN: Natives Children Participate in Adult Activities; Non-native children typically do not participate in Adult Activities
(4) FAMILY LIFE: Native – family is extended; Non-native – family is nuclear
(5) TIME: Native – whenever everyone is ready; Non-native – when the clock says so!
(6) EXPRESSION OF IDEAS AND FEELINGS: Native express through actions; Non-native express through speech

A dominant culture typically believes it is superior to all others. Let Lakota Elder Larry Salway break that myth as he contrasts Native and Non-Native perspectives on "age", "family", and others in part 1 of 2.
Larry Salway grew up on the Rosebud Reservation in southwestern South Dakota. He rose out of the poverty of his childhood and became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and later, a professor at the Oglala Lakota College campuses in Kyle and Rapid City, SD. He served for five years as Tribal Judge in Pine Ridge, SD. Mr. Salway has also served as pastor of churches in Arizona and South Dakota. Larry is Co-President of Life Initiatives.
